It's About Jobs, Stupid!

To me this taxation argument is irrelevant. You can quarrel all you want about taxes or cutbacks we’re just not going to grow like we are accustomed to and the American middle-class will soon be an endangered species. American business has found it easier to out source their job costs, pollution issues and compliance challenges overseas to some third world nation where the costs and standards are lower than in the USA. And if they need someone to bail them out overseas they can always hire some American kids for the cheap in the military because the kids can’t find any other work stateside anymore.

Over the past two decades the sectors that promised to create jobs that would replace the lost manufacturing jobs, service and technology, have been outsourced to India. The manufacturing jobs, of course, went to China. In the meantime we have been reduced to third world status by exporting raw materials to China. The Chinese do their part by buying our now downgraded Treasury bonds.

It’s really that simple, no jobs, no growth as long as American corporations are allowed to shelter their profits overseas. The housing bubble, like the Internet bubble before it, artificially hid the lack of job growth. Frankly, I doubt the financial markets are capable of conjuring up another bubble to mask the true pain of job loss for the middle class. Worse, Obama doesn’t get it nor do the Republicans.

Of Birthers and Deathers

Yes, it’s been a bad week week for fundamentalist religious cults and I’m not just talking about al-Qaeda. As bad as it was for al-Qaeda it’s been a devastating two weeks for the tea party members or what I call the Republican birthers. First, Obama releases his birth certificate and he trumps that performance, sorry Donald, by writing Osama Bin Laden’s death certificate. Talk about being ballsy! Tea party members were having enough problems sustaining momentum from the recent budget clash with the President but this news was devastating to their fundamentalist cause.

Then Obama threw the tea party members a bone by not releasing Osama’s death photo and it instantly gave rise to a nascent deather movement that insisted the administration was perpetuating yet another fraud on a gullible American public. Hell, they had to get something right, right? The Internet was alive with all sorts of chatter even more so than the al-Qaeda sycophants. It finally hit a crescendo when the queen bee of tea baggers, Sarah Palin, twittered that Obama so just stop “pussy footing around” and release the damn photo. Good times, huh? But alas, that movement was also to be short-lived because al-Qaeda soon acknowledged that in deed their spiritual leader Osama was no more, a victim of American resolve and presumed to be chum for the denizens of the ocean bottom.

So what’s a poor birther to do? No birth certificate and then Obama takes out public enemy number one all in the span of a couple of weeks. The only ones more despondent than the birthers has to be that motley collection of Republican presidential nominees left with no agenda other than the budget. But have no fear birthers and I take you back to a simpler time almost twenty years ago and to the wise words of a lone deranged muppet named James Carville who cried in the political wilderness:

“It’s the economy, stupid!”

Its amusing how much obsessive energy goes into questioning the birth certificate of Obama by Tea Party advocates.  I didn’t vote for Obama as much out of respect for McCain as for my innate distrust of Obama’s redistribution of wealth plans. That said, I can also smell the whiff of racism in the tea-bagger birthers take back the country campaign which is really synonymous with tired, old white guys who despise Obama’s dark skin. The birther issue, much like the 9-11 conspiracy theory, was fueled as much by distrust, paranoia and wishful thinking by birthers than being based on any real factual information.

Same can be said of Tea Party zeal for going after the unions for all of the nation’s troubles. Of course, all of the fools are just spouting the words of the Rupert Murdoch funded conservative Fox News propaganda machine. You don’t hear nearly as much vitriol regarding the TARP funds and where the money went into billion dollar bonuses for fund managers and widows.  The Fox News dogs heed their master fairly well and frankly nobody on either side of the political spectrum really knows what to make of the TARP mess.  Like the remains at Gilgo the consequences of the TARP episode will take time to expose and by then the trail will have grown considerably colder.

However; tea part advocates need not fear about lacking appropriate family fare entertainment now that the germaphobic, people firing, liberal entremanurial publicity machine called Donald Trump announced his entry  to an already colorful field of Republican presidential aspirants.  And boy does he knows how to work a conservative Tea Party audience particularly by stoking this birther nonsense.  I give Trump credit for taking China on and how uneven the competitive manufacturing playing field is with China but the rest of his platform borders on sheer lunacy.

Why lunacy?  Well, let’s look at one of Trump’s foreign policy initiatives and you can forget about calling Trump a cowboy; his take on the Mideast oilfield strategy would make even a foreign policy cowboy like George Bush blush in its sheer audacity! To quote Donald about the Iraq oil fields, “You’re taking– we’re reimbursing ourselves– at least, at a minimum, and I say more.  We’re taking back $1.5 trillion to reimburse ourselves (for the Iraq war).”    Let’s see, we are going to invade and decimate your country, kill thousands of your citizens for non-existent WMDs and then charge you back for the privilege because… well we’re America and we can! What a deal and as only The Donald can pitch to a world-wide audience!  This guy is a genius, I don’t care what they say about his cross-weaved combover being “an elaborate structure best left to an architecture critic”.

And is that the real problem with going off the political deep end with the Donald , we just don’t get to have the real conversation about social entitlements and how do we go about equitably cutting them back?  Instead, we get more side-show snake oil entertainment from a carnival barker. Fret not however; Trump’s team of crack investigators will soon get to the bottom of the Obama birth certificate mystery, whether you gave a damn or not!

Latest News:

“Well I’ve been told very recently, Anderson, that the birth certificate is missing,” Trump told CNN’s Anderson Cooper Monday. “I’ve been told that it’s not there or it doesn’t exist. And if that’s the case it’s a big problem.”

Latest word is Trump now wants to see Obama’s college grades in addition to his birth certificate. Obama should agree but with the caveat that Trump must release a video on his hair styling techniques.  Enquiring minds want to know!

BREAKING NEWS:  OBAMA RELEASES LONG-FORM BIRTH CERTIFICATE! NOW WHAT WILL BIRTHERS DO!

File:SpeakerGingrich.jpg

Here’s a recent article quoting the Newtster Newt Gingrich as he went campaigning for the 2012 Presidential Election:

“I have two grandchildren: Maggie is 11; Robert is 9,” Gingrich said at Cornerstone Church here. “I am convinced that if we do not decisively win the struggle over the nature of America, by the time they’re my age they will be in a secular atheist country, potentially one dominated by radical Islamists and with no understanding of what it once meant to be an American.”

I don’t quite get the message. Is Newt Gingrich suggesting that the radical Islamists and secular atheists are teaming up to take over America?  Now why Gingrich thinks atheists will join Allah-following Islamists in taking over America, well that’s just weird out of the box thinking that only the Newt can do. 7-11′s, gas stations and Starbucks aside, I just don’t see the Islamist-Atheist demographic increasing their numbers to the point of taking over the country. Is there some conspiracy whereby they’re going to inter-marry and give birth to little Islamic-Atheists?  Could such a person even exist outside Salman Rushdie? And if you follow Gingrich’s thinking, does being Islamic or an atheist automatically preclude you from being an American?  At least he showed a little restraint in his flamboyant commentary;  he didn’t throw homosexuals into the mix but then again he probably assumes all atheists to be homosexual!

Frankly, hasn’t Gingrich read the recent census reports regarding the rise of the Hispanic population within the US mainland?  Really, if you’re Protestant your biggest fear should be being swamped by the waves of Latino Catholic immigrants and not by some unholy alliance between radical Islamists and Atheists. Besides, Atheists adopting Sharia law, that will be a cold day in hell, right?

Seems this hyperbolic insight flowed as Newt Gingrich was addressing CornerStone Church, a megachurch in San Antonio, Texas, led by the Rev. John Hagee, an influential leader among American evangelicals. You might recall Hagee’s endorsement of then-presidential candidate John McCain in 2008 being plagued by instant controversy. McCain rejected the endorsement because of comments Hagee had made regarding the Holocaust, claims that Adolf Hitler had been fulfilling God’s will by hastening the return of the Jews to Israel, all of course in accordance with biblical prophecy. What crapola! Hitler as an instrument of god! Doesn’t matter; Republicans love to pander to this nutty crowd!

Needless to say, the Newt Gingrich was strangely quiet about his own martial indiscretions and numerous divorces that have made his appeal to the Bible Belt, well just a little less than appealing.  His extra-marital affairs during the cancer illness of his first ex-wife were particularly insensitive and smarmy to many onlookers so it remains to be seen if he can attract a following by pandering to the Bible-Belt.

In his own defense I love this quote from the Newtster:  “There’s no question at times in my life, partially driven by how passionately I felt about this country, that I worked too hard and things happened in my life that were not appropriate.” So that’s what causes infidelity: working too hard for one’s country?  Damn it, with all of the ongoing divorce there must be a lot of patriots out there in the hinterlands. Well, something was hard but not necessarily the work and how you can say this with a straight face is beyond me.  In any case, Gingrich will convert them all even if it means taking on the unholy alliance of Islamic-Atheist Un-Americans!

That said, with the Newt clearly on his game and with Donald Trump sounding more and more like a closet Birther, this presidential campaign has all the earmarks of being just as entertaining as the last one!  And here’s one prediction you can bank on, as the economy goes so does Obama chances for re-election!

More Glenn Beck Stupidity

Continuing what I said earlier but I think the American Conservative movement has reached a new nadir with recent antics of the Tea Party, Glenn Beck, Christine “I am not a witch but I dabbled” O’Donnell and Sarah Palin. Just listen to this compilation of past Glenn Beck comments. I mean I love this guy he is such a mental midget. When he talks he makes Rush sound like Albert Einstein. Really, how does he get dressed in the morning? You just know he has to wear loafers!

Wouldn’t you just love to put him alone in a room with Rev. Al Sharpton and throw away the key?

Update: Conservative talk show host Sean Hannerty decided to defend Christine O’Donnell’s position on masturbation because it was consistent with her Roman Catholic faith. Unfortunately, an old 11 year old video from Bill Maher’s Politically Incorrect Show indicates that while Christine has a problem with the auto-erogenous she also had a dalliance with the occult in her youth.  Wonder how Sean feels about defending Christine’s advocacy of witchcraft? Got hand it to her; she is quite the flake!

That’s the problem with the conservative freaks, their criticisms are far ranging except regarding their very own.  However Sean Hannerty does have a point that the left also has a nasty habit of defending Muslim fundamentalism under the guise of multiculturalism.   Frankly, I never had a problem with calling out the fundamentalist freaks.  Muslim extremist have hijacked their religion to push their own agenda of misogyny, anti-western and anti-Antisemitism lies all in the guise of their religion when in fact they have just hijacked the words of the prophets. What is scary is that moderate Muslims have chosen to remain silent which in turn signifies their tacit support of such extremists. Do they really want the world to become an entirely misogynistic, antisemitic and anti-christian burka shrouded existence?

From CNN:

Christine O’Donnell is the 41-year-old upset winner of Delaware’s GOP Senate primary. Christine O’Donnell, who is struggling to gain the support of GOP leaders, insists she will win the general election with or without the backing of the Republican establishment.  She does have the backing of Sarah Palin however.

Politically, O’Donnell is firmly aligned with Tea Party movement, which funneled more than $150,000 to her campaign shortly before Tuesday’s primary. Largely opposed to abortion rights and gun control, she has been endorsed by two conservative populists — former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina.

Among other things, O’Donnell, a Catholic, once headed a pro-abstinence group called Saviors Alliance for Lifting the Truth.

“We need to address sexuality with young people,” she said in an interview that aired on MTV in the 1990s. “The Bible says that lust in your heart is committing adultery. [And] you can’t masturbate without lust.” Hardly seems worth the effort without the lust?

Soory but a true conservative leaves both your wallet and your soul alone. Do we really need the government to teach masturbation abstinence to our school kids? And that’s going to work? And really, isn’t masturbation preferable to some of the other alternatives for relieving sexual tension in young adults and it definitely qualifies for most people as safe sex, right? Even Tea baggers can’t argue with that logic or can they?

In keeping with the sexual nature of this post check out this definition of a tea bagger: white Republicans who lost their business/home in the great recession, blames Obama rather than Bush or someone who rests their testicles on another person face. Never realized why the Tea Party hates the term “tea bagger”.

Technorati Profile

I wrote this blog over two years ago and there was a small firestorm surrounding my simple blog observation about the movie Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed not having any bootlegs in the market:

There is an easy way to measure the success of any studio movie and that is by measuring how many bootleg copies there are out there on the street. You know think Jerry Seinfeld and they range in quality from pre-studio release copies to poor copies taken by Kramer wannabes. In comparison, copies of Iron Man have already hit the street. Now, before some reader goes off on a rant, let me set the record straight about bootlegs. I actually go to the movies or rent from Blockbuster on a weekly basis and if it’s a visually stunning movie. buy a legit copy for my own personal use. Why? I am a video and audiophile with a home theater and enjoy the sights and sounds of a good movie. Bootleg copies of movies are often of wildly varying quality and in almost all cases they don’t meet my exacting standards. Yes, I am one of those weirdos that play with different brands of HDMI cables.

With that said, I have to be honest with you there was no way I was going to spend $20 and give that money to the ICR, Institute of Creation Research, to watch Expelled. Plus, I would never subject my wife to an hour and half of this drivel, her time is too precious and she would kill me if I did. Moreover, I don’t go to the movies alone, its has been a couples ritual for me during the entirety of my life and I am certainly not changing my ways for Expelled and Ben Stein.

So I have been looking for a bootleg copy to watch to make my comments on this blog but guess what? There are no bootlegs, the street vendors don’t have any copies nor is it available online as a valid torrent. I even noticed that most of the major movie critics have kept away from reviewing this masterpiece as well (no, your pastor doesn’t count!).

Why? Supply and demand baby, nobody wants to see Ben Stein drone on about the horrors of Darwinism save a handful of religious fundamentalists and conservative gadflies. The rest of the silent majority is too busy trying to figure how we can afford to fill our cars with a tankful of gas, thank you Mr. George Bush. The gross to date, a month after the release of Expelled, is just shy of $7.5 M, not exactly Michael Moore territory for a documentary. So much for a Creationist’s revolution in the United States and things will not fare much better for this crowd with the fall presidential election. You can already hear the yawns!

Well in two years two events have transpired.  First, I finally sat or should I say laid down to watch this this Ben Stein snore fest and while there may not be any bootlegs there are some Expelled torrents are currently available at your local pirate sites. So, score one for Ben but I didn’t pay for the privlege of watching this propaganda! Not I didn’t illegally download the movie but I used my Netflix account.  By the way, accompanying the torrents is usually some acerbic exchanges between true believers but frankly overall the movie  was a flop in galvanizing the Christian fundamentalists in the scientific community; moreover, the Obama election was a big blow to their movement.

And my final review of the movie?  Well, I feel asleep twice while watching this mess.  It was boring and ponderous and the quick cuts to some vintage movie outtakes was tedious at best and not very amusing.  Also, the movie’s argument about academic ostracism has long since been discredited and if Intelligent Design proponents feel like pariahs that is more a function of their poor science and not necessarily directed at their individual religious beliefs. Irreducible complexity,  that is the idea that biological systems are too complex to evolve from simpler predecessors,  is a poor argument no matter how many times it gets trotted out.   Why?  Basic genetic work has shown how the switching on and off of given genes can have myriad effects on biological systems, some good and some bad.  Turning on retro features such as teeth in chick embryos is now doable and demonstrates s the basic elements of how genetics can drive evolution via natural selection.

Furthermore, Ben Stein’s argument that the Nazis used Darwinism as an excuse to kill Jews is a stupid, specious argument.  There is little in Hitler’s past indicates that he was a big Darwin fan but rather he was an ardent anti-Semite  that used his hatred as a rallying point among his German constituency. The Nazi concept of the master race had more to do with some pagan notions of Arayat supremacy that it had to do with either the natural selection of Darwinism or, for that matter, Christianity. One could easily argue that Christianity was more to blame for the Holocaust than science, but neither would be an accurate interpretation of what actually transpired in Nazi Germany.

In any case, this all seems so long ago and the movie’s failure to become an Intelligent Design rallying point combined with it’s pitiful $8 million in total revenue speaks volumes about the present state of the Creationist movement.  Today the focus is on jobs and not religious fundamentalism in the US unless your Muslim and insistent on building a mosque near the WTC site. That will be the subject of another blog and you maybe surprised by my take on the issue.

Cheers,

Erik John Bertel

Author of Flores Girl: The Children God Forgot

Great News! Flores Girl:The Children God Forgot is now available as a free ebook novel on the iPhone!

Conservative talk-radio blowhard Rush Limbaugh is now yelling at Republican leaders for rushing to demand Texas Rep. Joe Barton retract his controversial apology to BP slackard CEO Tony Hayward during last week’s moronic congressional hearing.  Seems like the blow hole is insulted that Americans wanted to be reimbursed for the damages caused by BP.  Screw the  birds and the fishing industry, big oil is about to be hurt!  Way to stand with the little guy lard ass!

On his radio show Monday, Limbaugh suggested the GOP leadership likely agrees with Barton’s sentiments, but are driven by recent national polls which suggest the majority of Americans support President Barack Obama’s push for BP to set aside $20 billion for future liability claims. To date, Republicans have no desire to commit political suicide especially for an indifferent, poorly managed British petroleum firm.

“It was a shakedown pure and simple,” said Limbaugh, echoing the words for which Barton later apologized. “And somebody had the audacity to call it what it was and now everybody’s running for the hills.”  That is anybody with half a brain is running for the hills as more ill wind blows from Rush.

“All you have to do is look at the polling,” Limbaugh continued. “We’re talking about Republicans inside the beltway. All you have to do is look at the polling data and media coverage and find out what they are going to do.”  How about looking at the oil kicking up on the beach moron?

Barton, the ranking Republican on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, was quickly attacked from both the right and the left after apologizing to Hayward during the BP chairman’s appearance before his committee Thursday. Amid threats he would lose his leadership post  Barton retracted his stupid apology.  After all, his stupid apology just didn’t play well in Peoria, or should I say Baton Rouge after the drill, baby drill comments from the same Republican knuckleheads.

“Let’s just slither away under the rock here,” Limbaugh said.  “We’ll let Joe Barton get eaten by the Democrat lizards on this to protect ourselves. This is politics and this is the reason why true believers have such a problem with politics. It’s just that simple and no more complicated than that.”

Yeah, you’re right and screw the little guy losing his livelihood in Louisiana due to some oil giant lacking the foresight to foresee something going wrong on one of their rigs.   Who knows?  Maybe Rush is expecting a big payback from BP to cover the costs of having Elton John sing at his wedding.  And why not  when you consider all of the money Joe Barton has received from the oil business over the years? That’s what it’s all about for both the Republicans and Democrats:  patronage, kickbacks, lobbyists and cozy revolving door relationships with the companies you are supposed to be regulating while you BS the American public.

Here’s a novel idea! May I recommend as a public service that we use Rush’s fat ass to plug for that oil hole in the ocean.  It’s not a bad idea considering this would be the first public service he has done in a long time – he certainly didn’t fight for his country in Vietnam when he had the opportunity!  Clearly, he is more concerned about party loyalty than being right or doing what is good for the people of the Gulf and haven’t we had enough of this behavior from both parties?

I hesitate to release this particular blog because I know this small essay is going to be taken the wrong way by so many different people. In short, this blog is not going to appear to be very politically correct and, for that matter, will probably piss off people of all political persuasions. That’s one of the dangers to be associated with independent thought. One thing I do recognize about Americans is that we are not big on nuance. Take for instance the McCain supporter who claimed a black Obama supporter carved on the letter “B” on her face the other day. McCain’s Karl Rove operatives were all over the story leaking it to the press only to find out the dumb ass actually carved the letter herself backwards in a mirror. Oh, did she mention it was a dyslexic black Obama supporter? Again, we are not big on nuance and, hence, my somewhat offensive blog article title.

I’m not even staking a position on this issue and this is neither an anti-feminist diatribe nor is it necessarily a knock against Sarah Palin, heaven knows I have done enough of that in my past blogs. Frankly, I don’t know or care if Sarah is nursing her youngest son but do Americans realize that for the first time in American history there is a remote chance that we could have an American President that is actually breastfeeding? Besides the prurient aspects of this possibility, this is obviously another nail in the coffin of the stuffy old, white guys who have been running and running down our country for the past two hundred plus years. Much has been made of Obama possibly being the first black president, second if you count Bill Clinton, but we never had a mother running this country and being the “Commander in Chief” before.

Other nations have already had female leaders typically Prime Ministers. These women tended to be older, mature types that had withstood the political winds of their respective countries. Some were maternal, perhaps loving partners to their respective mates but the essence that made them most feminine was long in the past by the time they took office. Face it, Palin is a younger, untried personality much like Obama. Plus, we know scientifically that women are genetically and hormonally different than their males counterparts. Accordingly, women have been treated very differently by Western culture and to some degree negatively. That has changed with the advent of total war and while we have had a prohibition against woman serving in combat units that does not mean they have been in harm’s way, particularly in Iraq, so the political sands have been slowly shifting in favor of women expanding their role in society.

Biden recently made a comment about Obama being tested during his first six months in office. A lot of people have been thinking that about an Obama presidency but Biden said this as a stupid off-the cuff remark that engendered all sort of comebacks from the McCain-Palin camp. But what if McCain wins and one morning several months into his presidency McCain never gets up. Come on, you know he is old enough to peacefully go in the middle of the night, right? Consequently, we would have the untried Palin as President and Commander in Chief of this country. Once she gets in office, terrorists decide to test her because hell that is what they do to any American President. They hold hostage a number of Americans and among the hostages are a number of children. Being a mother does this color her judgment and subsequently alter her tactical response to the situation?

Most people will say what the hell does her gender have to do with any of this? These are the same people who say race has nothing to do with this campaign. Nice brave, politically correct words but we all know differently. For the average African-American you don’t think Obama’s color makes a difference? Did Kennedy make a difference to voting Catholics in 1960? Kennedy’s Catholicism did not make a difference to some Protestants at that time? For the young, first-time voter you don’t think age makes a difference? You’re telling me they don’t think McCain is a fossil who can’t even boot a computer never mind download an MP3? You don’t think Hispanics don’t care that Obama is black? Or for that matter some white Americans don’t think he is a black Arab? Yes, brave politically correct words but not really grounded in the reality of the American electorate and the behavior of people in general. Nuance Alert: I didn’t say all Americans are rednecks but I did say they are human.

This type of fossil, conservative thinking about the ramifications of Palin being President is, of course, negated by the black man’s presence. After all, she is not running as President and Obama is and, for many Palin is clearly the lesser of two possible evils. If she ever got into the Oval office images of her kids playing would abound as she commanders the office of Chief Executive. Think of Kennedy and John John and you’ll scare the hell out of lot of people. Plus she could be breast feeding one of her brood at that time! Really, this is not an issue for the American people? How about America’s enemies? Think about Kennedy playing poker with Khrushchev during the Cuban Missile? Would a mother behave or negotiate differently with a powerful enemy knowing that her child could ultimately be killed by her decisions? What about your enemies who may not be so politically correct? If you’re Putin, do you reconsider annexing Georgia if a nursing mother is running the United States?

On second thought, maybe we need more of that type of maternal thinking in this world? Think about all the wars and stupid bloodshed we have seen started and waged by tired, old white men who were more concerned about their egos and place in history than they were concerned about the fates of their children. And, face it, nobody does total war like tired, old white men. Maybe a mother would be a refreshing change of pace and perhaps their perspective is one that is long overdue in our government? But isn’t Palin’s son serving in Iraq and isn’t she in favor of the war, claiming Iraq is a mission from God? Being a woman hasn’t stopped female suicide bombers, right?

Let’s face it, bringing this breastfeeding issue up is another variation on the old double standard, right and I am being little more than a sexist pig, correct? Nobody mainstream touches this topic but if you Google “Palin breastfeeding” there are over a million hits so Americans are talking about this topic. As to the double standard, hey guys can’t breastfeed and secondly, as I said before, men are very genetically and hormonally different from women despite what political correctness may say about the topic. Nuance Alert: I didn’t say men are better, I just said different. (As a matter of fact, woman are genetically superior to men because of their double-X chromosomes which can make them less susceptible to a variety of sex linked genetic diseases.)

And hello, Americans are still big on double standards. Hillary is allowed to squirt a few crocodile tears when she is being picked on and she didn’t get dinged too bad for her blatant display of womanly emotion. However, if a man was to do that during a campaign, well can you say sayonara to him in the polls? Moreover, we can make all sorts of aspersions about the young black guy being tested early on if he gets elected but we can’t question the nursing mother being tested? I don’t know, I just can’t figure this one out and I guess we’ll just let history take place in the weeks ahead.

***By the way I recently heard that almost two to three million Chinese factory workers have been laid off thanks to the latest economic downturn. With the Olympics over expect the Chinese authorities to clamp down on dissension within the general populace and note the recent headlines regarding the death sentence for the mayor found taking bribes for Olympic contracts. If this is a relatively short recession the Chinese will recover but a long, drawn out recession will test the mettle of both the Chinese people and their government. This is going to get interesting and scary at the same time.***

I took a unwanted hiatus from writing this blog for three weeks and upon my return I see that Obama is squarely ahead in the polls.  My feeling about this turn in events is so incredibly ambivalent, I’m not sure what to write.  Frankly, my real wish is to go back to 2000 and to see the true maverick McCain reemerge at some point during this campaign. That sadly is not to be.  Instead, the new conservative/fundamentalist McCain has turned off independent minded voters including Colin Powell but I find it equally difficult to embrace Obama as well. So I am stuck here ruminating about this election as I watch the death throes of the failed Bush presidency exert even more pain on this country. The economy is still tanking albeit not at the perilous rates of the past couple of weeks and everybody is trying to catch their breath.  Both candidates are doing their best to avert attention from the goings on hoping that Americans don’t wise up and start asking some truly tough questions.  Here are just are my ten questions the ones that “Joe the Plumber” missed asking:

1. It appears that Obama was palling around with terrorists but Sarah Palin has a history of partying out with secessionists while saying “God bless” to them at their conventions.  Yet, does anybody care in the mainstream media care or can they be bothered to bring this topic up with her? I don’t know, if you hang around people who hate the US and want to secede from the mainland, well, in my book, that’s just not cool. And to me, that is more important than focusing on whether or no she can see Russia from her backdoor.  All the secessionists want to do is keep the oil for themselves and give every Alaskan a small fortune for just living in that arctic wasteland.  Who do they think they are?  Saudi princes? Don’t they know that free rides are the province of Washington DC and lobbyists?

2. When billions of dollars are lost on Wall Street and none of theses financial troubles are reflected in past quarterly corporate statements does anybody go to jail?

3. Does anybody now know doubt that the precipitous rise in gas prices was driven solely by speculators and all at the expense of the American consumer?  Shouldn’t markets be driven by long term investment rather than short term gain?  What type of behavior are we driving here with the current tax code?

4. Should we continue to give loans to people who sign mortgage paperwork without knowing if they have a fixed or adjustable rate mortgage?  Can’t there be a legal requirement to state this more clearly?  And rather than give these idiots a bail out can’t we just move them to reasonable fix rate mortgage?  Oh yeah, I forogt without the ARM they couldn’t afford the monthly nut in the first place so never mind.

5. Why the hell would Republicans be interested in bringing to the floor a bill that gives corporations a break on their overseas investments?  We haven’t shipped enough American jobs overseas over the past decade? Can anybody question the short-sighted greedy wisdom of these stupid robber barons? How about a tax break for companies keeping manufacturing jobs here?  You know like the 10% funding the Chinese gave their factory owners over the past decade?  Nobody talks about that subsidy do they now? Not as long as we get cheap Chinese crap created by a multitude of dirty coal-powered plants.

6. Drill, baby drill? Hey morons, that newly drilled American oil is still going to be pegged to the market price of OPEC oil so how does that help save me money at the pump?  Plus, there’s not enough oil in the US to make a dent in the overall world market.  We’re like a crack baby when it comes to oil and its time to kick the habit and embrace other technologies including nuclear. Here’s an idea:  let the USA develop new energy technology and we sell it to the rest of the world. Then we don’t have to worry about the Middle East and Russia can go to hell with their oil. And just maybe we’ll have a positive impact on the global warming trend before we are all truly screwed.

7. Socialism sucks but is this new American economy truly reflective of free market capitalism? We all know the answer to that question and that’s without a course in macroeconomics.  After the bailouts how do we get back on track?  And does more profit necessarily mean more American jobs?

8.  Will anybody ever investigate the story of the WMDs in Iraq and our failed intelligence efforts? Or was the intelligence always there but instead was the intelligence actually missing in the Bush White House? Better yet, what the hell truly happened  on 9/11 and why is Osama Bin Laden still free?  How flawed is our current Pakistan foreign policy that we are not even allowed to take a shot at this prick? Are we even looking or do we need him to justify the hundreds of billions spent on defense?

8. After the hundreds of billions, no wait, make that several trillion dollars,  that were spent to bailout out our banking system and to bring democracy to Iraq is 70 billion dollars for bringing health care to all Americans too much to ask for?  Oh, yeah I forgot, that nagging socialism claim.

10. And finally, who did Lehman Brothers hire as their lobbyist firm in Washington?  With all of the hundreds of billions flying about for financial bailouts those guys truly really suck and dropped the ball. Maybe McCain picked them up to run his campagin with his other lobbyist friends.

With Americans both angry and scared who best to trust, the cool smooth talking Obama or the often angry, cranky old guy, McCain? My guess, barring a complete Obama collapse, is the cool reassuring guy.  I’m not convinced that is necessarily a good thing.

By the way have you noticed that with Obama firmly in the lead Hillary is suddenly more involved in his campaign? No sense in being irrelevent for the next four years she must be figuring.
