She is pretty, intelligent and very sensitive. He is a handsome alcoholic, woman chaser with a tattered career. He finds her too maintenance and she sees immature boy in him. Together, Sarah and Richard, must deal with the discovery of a new human species while contending with the onslaught of corporate raiders, Indonesian pirates and religious zealots. You know this is going to be a big romance, that is, if they don't kill each other first! Their recent discovery of a living prehistoric human ancestor, Homo floresiensis on an isolated tropical island brought Sarah and Richard together. These small hobbit-like creatures are not the hobbits of JRR Tolkien's stories but a small tribe of prehistoric people living in seeming isolation for nearly a half million years on the Indonesian island of Irmã Flores. From the Smashwords Ebooks Blog - iPad Ebook Publishing Made Easy 2,000+ ebooks from Smashwords authors and publishers appeared on the iPad yesterday. Very few people in the publishing industry understand the profound implications of this. It's not just about the iPad - it's about how any author, anywhere in the world, can go from a Microsoft Word document to worldwide ebook store distribution in a matter of seconds or days. Welcome to the age of fully democratized, instant publishing where the bookstore is moving to a iPad screen near you. Authors can now publish and distribute with unprecedented freedom. In the old days, like two or three years ago, the best route for any author to reach readers was to find a literary agent who could sell your book to a large print publisher. After the big sale, you'd wait another 12-18 months before your book appeared in bookstores. For many authors, that's when depression set in, because sales rarely matched expectations, and if books don't sell quickly they're yanked from shelves and cast out, condemned to out-of-print oblivion like some unwelcome refuse on its way to the remainder bin. This all changes with the Kindle and the Apple iPad. iPad romance Manga Girl ebooks now rule and this iPad ebook is free to you!. |

Is Flores Girl a Candidate for the Romance Manga Girl Treatment? |

The other day somebody suggested to me that Flores Girl could find a home as a comic book novel or as a graphic novel. They went as far as to suggest the romance Manga Girl genre was not out of the question. To be honest with you I had already discounted Flores Girl as a children’s novel and I know a number of author’s think otherwise. For the uninitiated reading this you are probably wondering just what the hell a romance Manga Girl is? Hey I asked the very same question about romance Manga Girl as well. Well a romance Manga Girl is a Japanese style romance comic book with the characters typically drawn in the classic anime style; you know with the prototypical large doe eyes that were inspired by Disney’s Bambi. Almost sixty years after their original introduction these Japanese romance comics have made their way into American pop culture with the recent Astro Boy and Speed Racer Hollywood movies. Both comic book movies were originally inspired from anime Manga Girl source material. Funny, as a kid I remember watching Astro Boy with no inclination that this was either anime or Manga Girl yet as genre anime and maga have become increasingly more adult oriented. So how does the Flores Girl novel fit into the romance Manga Girl mix? With their diminutive size and curious body type, i.e. big feet and pot bellies, the dwarf Ebu lend themselves to being drawn as characters in Manga Girl and would be good candidates for such a romance Manga Girl. Sarah’s initial interaction with the Flo and later her fling with Richard would also be classic material for a romance Manga Girl. After that you’re on thin ice looking at Flores Girl as a romance Manga Girl genre. Why? Well, the rest of Flores Girl characters don’t readily lend themselves to being portrayed as doe-eyed romance Manga Girl characters; moreover, the adult themes of Flores Girl aren’t exactly your typical romance Manga Girl fare either. True, you got your classic battle of good versus evil but Sarah and Richard’s rocky relationship is better source material for a remake of “War of the Roses” rather than a Manga Girl inspired romance novel. Plus when you add the religious strife, Richard’s raging alcoholism, Sarah’s prissiness and the overall adult humor of Flores Girl this make it a poor source for a romance Manga Girl or any graphic novel for that matter. There is a center formulaic rhythm to the stereotyped characters you find in any romance Manga Girl and frankly the characters of Flores Girl just don’t fit the graphic novel or Manga Girl romance mold nor should they ! In short... Flores Girl is bit quite ready for a romance Manga Girl treatment yet at least not while I am still writing the trilogy. That’s the advantage of self-publishing: retaining control and resisting the urge to chase a quick dollar but you never know what direction the trilogy will turn! |
