First, since this is my first post of the Year let me wish all including the nuemrous scrapebox spammers a Happy and Healthy New Year.  And no your spam won’t make the blog unless it is remotely relevant.

My first blog is in fact inspired by a fellow blogger at the  The Sensuous Curmudgeon.  This is a pro-evolution site where  the Curmudgeon vigorously exposes the Creationist efforts to subvert Science and Darwinsim.  Most of the nuts he targets are either Creationists or Intelligent Desgins nuts who want our classrooms teaching faith rather than science.  In a previous posting I blogged about how Amercians remains stubbornly fixed to their Creationists ideals.  That’s fine but I draw the line when the faith gets introduced into the classroom as an alternative explanation to science.  I mean, after all, we don’t insist on equal time for evolution during a bible classs right?  That’s stupid and, for that manner, so is confusing science with faith in the classroom.

However, I do blame one culprit for this mass American creationist stupidity that even President Bush adhered to:  our science teachers. When it comes time to teaching the scientific method this topic always get short shrift and is without a doubt the most boring lecture in the entire science curriculum.  Yet, it should be anything but boring since the scientific methodology represents the triumph of reason over blind faith and we all know where blind faith leads us:  religious wars.  Great people have been persecuted and killed for defending the truth of the scientific method  and this goes way back.  If you doubt me, go see the flick “Agora” starring the ever watchable Rachel Weisz playing the worlds first feminist scientific philosopher  Hypatia who lived during the turbulent times that marked the beginning of Christianity.  Reasoning and feminists just don’t go well back then or for now if you follow recent events in the Middle East. It’s not a great film by far yet its fascinating how the forces of logic always seem to bang heads with the violent sincerity of the faithful. Yet this dynamic never gets taught  to our students but gets buried in pages of bloodless, boring text. Here’s a taste from Wikipedia:

“Scientific method refers to a body of techniques for investigating phenomena, acquiring new knowledge, or correcting and integrating previous knowledge. To be termed scientific, a method of inquiry must be based on gathering observable, empirical and measurable evidence subject to specific principles of reasoning.A scientific method consists of the collection of data through observation and experimentation, and the formulation and testing of hypotheses.”

Makes you want to take a nap right? But here is what they are really saying:  if you can’t measure it and the results are not reproducible then it’s not science.  Well, you know where that leaves faith and the Bible right? And that upsets a lot of religious nuts because  religious nuts can’t stand two types of people:  total non-believers and the other religious nuts of a different faith. Why you may ask?  Because there is no reasonable or scientific reason for their blind faith in a god that appears to be at best a bit aloof. And anything that calls into doubt their own blind belief system is to be challenged immediately and with violence if necessary lest it sway the less than faithful of the flock.  Because its all about getting as many fanny’s into the pews or knees to the floor as humanly possible.

So here are my simple observations regarding Science and Creationism:

1. Creationism and Intelligent Design are not Science since they do not follow the scientific method but are based on faith.
2. Faith should not be taught in a science class nor should science be taught in a bible class. Sounds fair, right?
3. All religions and faiths are far less about spirituality than what you might think. Frankly, it’s about men controlling other men and the woman are just along for the ride.  Doubt my word?  You can challenge me when you see the first female Pope. Sorry, religion is a boy’s only club and any women that have temerity to dabble in spirituality well you know they are called: witches.
4. In other words religion is about answering the age old human male question: “Are you one of us (males only of course)?”

I admire Buddhism for a number reasons, not the least of which is the Buddha’s insight to the human nature.  That said, it too is inherently about men controlling men especially when you consider how the Buddhist monks treat Buddhist nuns.  But to that point this is what the Buddha had to about critical thinking:

“Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it.”

Wow, can you imagine a priest, preacher or an imam telling his flock that they should question the Bible or the Qur’an?  No way, but this type of reasoning from a religion that is over 2500 years old gives me some hope for the continuing evolution of religious and spiritual beliefs from the fundamentalist quagmire we now find ourselves in.

Don’t forget to the download the evolutionary adventure thriller:  Flores Girl: The Children God Forgot. With 250,000 downloads how cna you go wrong, especially  if it’s free, right?  Oh, yes the sequel, “The Sacred and Profane” is ready for release this spring.  Send me an email and I’ll give you a free copy to the sequel as well.

Cheers,

Erik John Bertel

Yep, a recent Gallup poll shows that 80% of all Americans believe that god has guided man’s evolution in one manner or another. Those Gallup Poll viewpoints run the gamut from the moronic strict interpretation of the bible all the way to the pseudo-scientific intelligent design movement.  I’m not quite sure how god works in his mysterious ways and or why he takes a step back in addressing some of man ‘s other issues but Americans do overwhelmingly believe he is guiding our evolution.

These creationist Gallup poll results are not surprising when you realize that many Americans come from strong fundamentalist roots and, in general abhor, learning science. And,yes I do believe laziness and blind religious beliefs go hand in hand. Come on be honest; isn’t it easier to say god did it rather than to say Deoxyribonucleic acid?  Also, evolution and science have come under political attack as humanist ploys that undermine religious faith as the United States teeters between conservative and liberal factions.

By the way I do not consider myself to be a humanist but find that label to be far too restrictive so I instead consider myself to be a Sentientist, i.e. having respect for all living creatures. That’s a natural extension of my belief in evolution;  after all some transient hominid species  had to straddle the animal-human boundary during the course of our evolution.

What Creationism has to do with science well your guess is as good as mine and asking the average American to reconcile science and faith is an exercise in bemused frustration.

Here’s the Gallup Poll report: Most Americans believe in God, and about 85% have a religious identity. It is not surprising as a result to find that about 8 in 10 Americans hold a view of human origins that involves actions by God — that he either created humans as depicted in the book of Genesis, or guided a process of evolution. What no doubt continues to surprise many scientists is that 4 out of 10 Americans believe in the first of these explanations.

These views have been generally stable over the last 28 years. Acceptance of the creationist viewpoint has decreased slightly over time, with a concomitant rise in acceptance of a secular evolution perspective. But these shifts have not been large, and the basic structure of beliefs about human beings’ origins is generally the same as it was in the early 1980s.

Americans’ attitudes about almost anything can and often do have political consequences. Views on the origins of humans are no exception. Debates and clashes over which explanations for human origins should be included in school textbooks have persisted for decades. With 40% of Americans continuing to hold to an anti-evolutionary belief about the origin of humans, it is highly likely that these types of debates will continue.

Here’s the latest update but hard to believe that when I got the original idea for Flores Girl: The Children God Forgot that was in fact over six years ago. Back then I just had a germ of an idea that was fueled by the Homo floresiensis find in Flores and, interestingly, I was looking for a partner to help me write the original novel. There were no takers so I took it upon myself to learn how to become an author and write a novel. At best, it has been at best a bumpy journey with some of the original work being, how should we say, a bit rough. Doing the podcast for Podiobooks was also an interesting experience as well as taught myself both podcasting and narration. Still the readers and listeners share my enthusiasm for this story and the beloved protagonists of the novel Sarah and Richard.

However; what is even more amazing is that readers and listeners have downloaded the Flores Girl Novel and Podcast over 250,000 times! You read right, over 250,000 times! That includes the Flores Girl Podcast at Podiobooks, the ebook novel at Wattpad and downloads from numerous partners such Memoware and Smashwords. There has been so much attention associated with this novel that I was been contacted by National Geographic team this year.

Personal family responsibilities have delayed the editing of the sequel but this incredible demand has fueled my desire to complete the sequel “The Sacred and the Profane” within the next couple of months. More importantly, I have written a good chunk of the third novel and plan on three other spin off novels including a prequel and what can best be described as two über-sequels. So the trilogy will now include three sequels and prequels for a total of six Flores Girl novels. I want to thank you all for you enthusiasm and your feedback. This adventure is just starting with the release of the sequel, “The Sacred and the Profane” and I hope you enjoy the subsequent Flores Girl Novels.

How did the Ebu Gogo get to Flores?

John Roach for National Geographic News

New found stone tools suggest the evolutionary history of the “hobbits” on the Indonesian island of Flores stretches back a million years, a new study says—200,000 years longer than previously thought. So how did they get to Flores?

The hobbit mystery was sparked by the 2004 discovery of bones on Flores that belonged to a three-foot-tall (one-meter-tall), 55-pound (25-kilogram) female with a grapefruit-size brain.

The tiny, hobbit-like creature—controversially dubbed a new human species, Homo floresiensis—persisted on the remote island until about 18,000 years ago, even as “modern” humans spread around the world, experts say.

Found in million-year-old volcanic sediments, the newly discovered tools are “simple sharp-edged flakes” like those found at nearby sites on Flores—sites dated to later time periods but also associated with hobbits and their ancestors—said study co-leader Adam Brumm, an archaeologist at the University of Wollongong in Australia, via e-mail.

The finding implies that a culture of stone tool wielding ancient humans, with origins in Africa, survived on the island for much longer than previously believed, according to the new research, published online today by the journal Nature.

“That’s exciting,” because it suggests that by a million years ago, early humans had covered more ground on their exodus from Africa than previously thought, said paleontologist Chris Stringer of the Natural History Museum of London, who wasn’t involved in the new study.

(Read “Flores Find: The People Time Forgot” in National Geographic magazine.)

Hobbit Ancestors off the Hook?

The stone-and-bone record had suggested that the hobbits’ ancestors—perhaps upright-walking-but-small-brained Homo erectus—left Africa about 1.5 million years ago and reached Flores by 880,000 years ago.

Once there, it’s been thought, the hobbit ancestors quickly hunted a pygmy elephant species and a giant tortoise species to extinction.

The date of the newly discovered stone tools, though, suggests elephant and tortoise died off a hundred thousand years after Flores’s colonization —indicating that the early Flores colonizers’ role in the extinction “must have been minimal,” study co-leader Brumm said.

What’s more, these early colonizers could have been more primitive than H. erectus—”that is our working hypothesis,” he added.

When the bones of the hobbit were first reported in 2004, the discovery team suggested they belonged to a unique species, Homo floresiensis, that had descended from Homo erectus.

Since then, scientists studying the hobbit bones have found features in the wrist, feet, skull, jaw, brain, and shoulders that suggest the little creature descended from something more primitive.

“I think that’s looking increasingly likely from its anatomy,” said the Natural History Museum’s Stringer.

Hobbit Findings Questioned

Not everyone is ready to accept the new date.

“I have no problem with hominins”—human ancestors—”being on Flores at 1.2 million years ago,” anthropologist James Phillips said. “After all, they were on Java by around 750,000 [years ago].”

But the fact that the implements were found in million-year-old volcanic sediments doesn’t guarantee the artifacts are a million years old, said Phillips, an emeritus professor with the University of Illinois at Chicago, said via email.

“There are many ways”—such as water-driven processes—”in which artifacts can move through sediments,” Phillips said.

He’s also dismayed that the new study assumes that stone-tool technology changed little on Flores for more than a million years.

“Everywhere else on Earth, change was slow but always—and I emphasize always—occurred.”

Controversy is nothing new in hobbit science, with many experts still at odds over whether Homo floresiensis is a separate species at all.

Several scientists have argued, for example, that the hobbits were modern humans with a genetic condition that causes dwarfing and other defects.

Hobbit Ancestors Rafted to Flores?

Regardless of what they were and when they arrived, the question remains: How did primitive humans get to Flores in the first place?

The Natural History Museum’s Stringer buys into a theory that they may have migrated from Africa, perhaps on foot, to the island of Sulawesi (map). There, the ancient humans may have been washed to sea by a tsunami—currents off Sulawesi flow southward, toward Flores.

“These creatures most likely got moved on rafts of vegetation,” he said.

To help shore up this theory, the team behind the original hobbit discovery is currently looking for evidence on Sulawesi that would prove humans occupied the island even earlier than they did Flores.

My theory is that humans set to sea earlier than we what we have uncovered in the anthropological record.  And if humans did set to sea earlier did they take the hobbits or Homo floresiensis for the ride and why?

Flores Girl Wattpad Press Release
Flores Girl:The Chil..

Great news! One of my goals was to up the download rate for Flores Girl:The Children God Forgot from a relatively sleepy 100 downloads a month to a 1000 downloads a month and the good news we are fast approaching that goal! For the Flores Girl podcast that 4000 downloads per month has been held steady for the past two years and we are rapidly approaching a 150,000 downloads. For those who haven’t read the novel Flores Girl is a science fiction adventure story about two scientists, Sarah and Richard, who unwittingly introduce a small tribe of prehistoric people living in isolation for a million years to the ultimate modern predator: humanity. This is their adventure, combining a clash of cultures, religious ardor with the oldest stories of all: the meaning of friendship and true love. This is the first of a trilogy of Flores Girl novels!

My next goal is far more ambitious for the free ebook: 10,000 downloads a month from www.floresgirl.com site! I better get some larger servers if I continue to pursue my goal of being one the better known self-published fiction writers!

I want to thank everyone who has downloaded the novel and I promise you that the sequel, The Scared and Profane, will not disappoint as Sarah learns the truth about her past and Richard’s fate! And for those of you who have emailed me I have not forgotten your free copy of the sequel!

Cheers,

Erik John Bertel

This is a relaunch of the official Flores Girl blog.  Flores Girl: The Children God Forgot is my first novel about the discovery of a new people by two American Scientists. This blog will provide important updates regarding the novel and the soon to arrive sequel “To Hell with Heroes”.  Moreover, because my novel was initially attacked by creationists and religious fundamentalists that were emboldened by the weird neo-conservative turn many religious groups have taken I have since gone on the offensive. This blog is my counter-attack against the forces of ignorance and fear mongering.  I am pro-evolution but not anti-religion.  As to my politics I am neither a liberal or conservative, Democrat or Republican but I am a fierce independent.

Originally, my first blog, that is the Millennium Writing blog was all about writing, creativity and the marketing of that creativity. The idea was that I would share with you my writing challenges and some ideas I have for the marketing of those very same writings. It was all about getting eyeballs for your work and breaking the constraints of the old school publishing world. There are thousands of manuscripts that end up in slush piles and millions of blogs that go unread. Somewhere in between there are a few success stories. To date that does not include my own work but hey you never know!

But lately the blog has taken a turn about the fight against Intelligent design and religious fundamentalists. The goals is to be a beacon of light among the human waves of ignorance. As to my own background I have a degree in Biology from the SUNY at Stony Brook and for a time studied physical anthropology. At some point in my life I came to the realization that I didn’t want to teach and charted an entirely new course in life but the love of science and nature has stuck with me nevertheless.

Oh, as to my own spiritual and religious beliefs, ah well.., oh, who to hell cares? All I know is I am not about to foist them off upon you and please no more of the tired arguments that evolution is a religion upon itself. Evolutionary theory is a science that is observable and subject to a rigorous scientific methodology. Furthermore, despite all the protestations by the Creationists, it is not a belief system like Intelligent Design. I can and have gone out to the field and collected fossils that are consistent with the theory of Evolution and that are inconsistent with the belief of a 6,000 year old earth. I ask all of the Intelligent Design advocates to do the same for their theories and I will be glad to weigh their evidence and present them a forum for their arguments. I’m looking for physical proof of your theories, you know like the bones of an angel or perhaps the proverbial bunny-rabbit fossil in a Precambrian rock. Come on give me something solid and not just your tired arguments. I want bones or proof that a personal god did it!

(Insert sound of crickets here!)

That’s not happening, am I right?

Anyway, I spend my days being a computer technology marketing slut when I am not combating the dark forces of Intelligent Design. On yeah, in my remaining hours I am attempting to complete this speculative fiction trilogy called Flores Girl with somewhat mixed results. When I say mixed results the writing has been well received, it’s completing the trilogy that is the challenge.

Anyway, the Floresgirl Blog will take the brunt of the fight against the evils of ID and creationism while I will leave MillenniumWriting to a discussion on marketing literature. Much tidier and neater that way, don’t you think?

Flo: A lead Character in Flores Girl

The Ebu Gogo (pronounced abu, rhymes with Paula Abdul) are the main characters in a traditional folk story told by the Flores Islanders. As the main characters in the island legends the Ebu Gogo are described as a small, nasty people with a voracious appetite that sometimes included the devouring of the occasional human baby. The Ebu Gogo were said to walk awkwardly and could be heard to murmuring in their own language and were said to be capable of parroting human speech. When they could tolerate the Ebu Gogo no more the Flores islanders drove the small people in the direction of the caves, perhaps near Liang Bau or perhaps they burned the survivors alive. In any case, these stories were probably told to keep truculent Flores children in line in much the same fashion as some western fairy tales are told.

Some scientists believe that the folk lore maybe a shared cultural memory of Homo floresiensis but there is no solid evidence to support that theory. However, legends have the Ebu Gogo disappearing about 400 years ago at the time of the arrival of the Portuguese explorers. Scientists working on the Homo floresiensis find have also referred to the Ebu Gogo as “Hobbits”. Followers of cryptozoology, the pseudoscience that studies legendary animals such as Bigfoot and Sasquatch, are also enamored of the Ebu Gogo legend. The Ebu Gogo are also the main characters in Flores Girl.   Their discovery by two American scientists begins a series of unfortunate events that has unforeseen consequences for all involved.
